I listen to Bowie, got a problem?

Big cats and big hair seemed to be the theme of Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2013 Couture Collection. Animal prints and fur have never really been my thing, but I have to say that some of the animal print looks were a hit (neutral toned outfits with light detailed print touches and trims) but some were a miss (head to toe animal print and a hot pink leopard print cape). I think that the collection did a pretty good job of capturing the mentality that is used in conjunction with animal prints which is fierce, strong, powerful women by using the mostly effective 80s-power-suit silhouettes and others that looked strict and austere while maintaining an Aura of french chic elegance and femininity.

The animal motif was used to the fullest extent until the collection slowly shifted to a theme of "rich". Rich textures (velvet, tulle, leather, chiffon) rich colors that complemented the earlier animal prints, and flowing silhouettes. Eventually the bold colors and designs overpowered the last remnants of the animal print theme (prints popping up on leggings, hats and hair) in some looks that certainly toed the line in terms of attention-grabbing vs attention-seeking.

My overall favorite thing about the collection was definitely the exceptional styling which as usual was found in the little things that may not be noticed upon first sight, elbow length gloves, cone shaped hats, and tulle scarves. Sometimes the problem with accessories in a collection is that they are overused which ends up drawing attention away from the main look. But the difference in this collection is that they complemented the clothing and added to the mood.
some of my favorite looks
This collection was definitely different from what I have come to expect from past Jean Paul Gaultier collections if only because of the exaggerated silhouettes that were on the verge of comical. And I think that was the point. The circus was a source of inspiration that was constantly hinted at in this collection. The colorful designs, the cone shaped hats, and the animal prints (big cats at the circus). Another obvious source of inspiration for John Paul Gaultier was the "David Bowie Is" show which the designer visited in London. Bowie's work inspired him so that he even used Bowie song titles as names for looks in his collection. Very subtle Jean Paul Gaultier. Very subtle.

Liebster Award

The lovely Sophie from Pretty Passions, Fine Fashions and Bronia from Bronia's Bubble have nominated me for a Liebster Award (their blogs are amazing, go visit them. Seriously. Go. NOW). I know what you're thinking, someone thinks that Kani is good at blogging .
Shock, horror!

Well, let's start.

THE RULES
  • You must share 11 things about yourself.
  • Answer the 11 questions that your tagger has given you.
  • Choose 11 other blogs for the nomination. Nominees must have under 200 followers on Google Friend Connect.
  • Leave 11 questions for your nominees.
  • Lastly, thank the person that nominated you and link back to their blog.
11 things about myself
(My life is kind of boring, so brace yourselves)

1. My goal for the summer was to read good books, watch good films, and do some crafting-diy-things.
2. I am  volunteering at my library this summer.
3. I don't like talking on the phone when I'm around others because I become hyper-aware of what I'm saying and how it will be interpreted by the people around me.
4. I once was a disco queen for Halloween.
5.  Whenever I go to a pizza place, or Starbucks or any other food place where they ask for your name for the order, I never give my real name, I always say a name that I think is really beautiful like Luna, Maia or Celeste, or Kasia. I don't know why I do this. I just do.
6. I love pineapples.
7. I am an only child.
8. I just finished reading Weetzie Bat.
9. My last school play had costumes and music from the 50s to 90s so yeah, it was pretty amazing.
10. I am wearing a Wonder Woman tee shirt right now.
11. According to my best friend, I am a "smart capable woman."

Sophie's questions

What's your favourite band?
I really can't decide because there's just too much music in the world but I would say either Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes or Rush or Florence and the Machine or the Dum-Dum Girls or Miss Li or Wild Child or the Staves or maybe the Vaccines or Bombay Bicycle Club Ugh... indecision.
If you had a time machine, where is the first place that you would go?
10 years to the future, just so I can see how I turn out. But then again, if I find out how I turn out , then I might change something, and then it would be different from what I saw, but would that just be exactly what I saw before? Argh. Paradoxes.
Do you have any posters on your bedroom walls? What are they of?
I actually have no posters on my wall but I do have a painting of a dove, the letter K made of flowers, and some more of my artwork.
Who are your heroes?
My main heroes are probably going to be Malala Yousafzai, and Anne Frank because they both showed such amazing bravery and courage at such a young age and it's just amazing.
Who's your favourite writer/author?
I can never honestly choose a favorite but I would say somewhere along the lines of John Green, e.l. konigsburg, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, H.G. Wells, Madeleine L'Engle, Lemony Snicket, David Levithan, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lois Lowry, Emily Dickinson, Rebecca Stead, George Orwell, Mark Haddon, Jerry Spinelli Eoin Colfer and other cool authors.
What's your favourite magazine?
Probably Interview Magazine because they have just the perfect pairings of interviewers and interviewees i.e. Miranda July and Lena Dunham. Or if I feel like indulging myself and ignoring the inherent exclusivity of high-fashion, then Vogue.
Do you like Rookiemag? Do you read it regularly? Do you have a favourite Rookie post?
Yes, and yes. My favorite one would probably be the one that makes me laugh the most which is this. Or my favorite photo set which is this. But there's so much stuff on Rookie that has helped me in life that it's pretty hard to choose.
Which film makes you laugh the most?
Um.. Meet the Parents is the only one I can think of right now.
What's the best concert you've ever been to?
Sadly, I've never been to an actual concert (I only really developed a good taste for music around the time I turned 11-ish, so no concerts for me), but in a perfect world, I would answer from a selection of Marina and the Diamonds, Florence and the Machine, Fleetwood Mac, Lana Del Rey, or the Vaccines.
If you could be in any TV series, what series would it be and why?
Definitely Downton Abbey, because... British accents, early 20th century culture/fashion in Britain and Dan Stevens.
Put the first picture you come across here when you refresh your tumblr or blog timeline.

source Am I the only one who burst into laughter after reading this?

And now for Bronia's questions
Why is your blog called what it is?
Most likely because all of the other blogs that started with the word "Style" were already in use combined with the fact that I was feeling uncreative. I'm actually thinking of changing it.
Cake, chocolate or ice-cream (you can't have a chocolate cake with ice-cream!)
Definitely chocolate, I don't know why it is but I'm the only one of all my friends and family who just despises cake. And I don't really like ice cream because after it starts to melt a bit,  I don't like the taste of the milkiness in my mouth.
What size feet do you have?
Size 8
 Favourite song?
This is a really hard question but...um... maybe "I'll be your's" by Those Dancing Days. But it's probably going to change in two weeks.
Would you rather have a dog sized elephant or a elephant sized dog?
Definitely a dog sized elephant because I love elephants, and I would like having one that I could keep in my house.
Who is your fashion idol?
Maybe Grimes, Elle and Dakota Fanning, Francoise Hardy, Betsey Johnson, Sky Ferriera, Katherine Hepburn or Winona Ryder. They all have insane style.
If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
Luna. If my parents named me Luna, I would be set up for success for the rest of my life (or at least moderate coolness).
What do you want to be when you are older?
I'm not really sure, but probably something that lets me be creative on a regular basis and maybe lets me travel all over the world.
What shoes are you wearing?
I'm barefoot right now.
Favourite item in your wardrobe?
Probably my army green jacket or my leather jacket or my tulle skirt (I feel really punk when I'm wearing them).
Do you have more cupboard or drawers in your house??
More drawers.

I nominate:
a at Wilting Flower
Alice at Too Much Light Burns the Negative
Selina at Selina noma
Kayah at Sweet and Sour Style
Britney at The Style Aviator
Katia at The Kaleidoscope Klub
Lauren at Plastic Pastels
Sinead at Peppermint Whiskers
Arely at Kill Your Idols
Sophie at For We Are Only Trampling Daisies
Eryn at Style Orbit

And your questions.

1. Your favorite childhood movie. {Wow that wasn't even a question}
2. What's the last thing you read (article or book)?
3. What album would be the soundtrack to the movie of your life?
4. Would you rather watch something being made or just see the finished product?

5. What do you do first when you have writer's/artist's block?
6. Describe yourself in 5 words or less.

7. Your favorite thing to drink.
8. Your favorite place, fictional or real (other than your hometown).
9. Reality television: yes or no. And why?
10. Top song to sing when you're home alone.
11. Do you like musicals? If so what's your favorite?

I'm giving myself a pat on the back because those questions were surprisingly hard to come up with.

Thanks for reading!
Later,

NOTE: I really want to post more outfit photos soon but until school starts again in a few days, I will continue to enjoy the luxury of spending all day in my pyjamas because summer's not over until it's over.

Feel my heart it's aching, wish I could stop breaking, spend all day just thinking for you

So I was browsing through tumblr today and I discovered some of the amazing kitschy kawaii artwork of Justin Wallis at MILKBBI and all I have to say is wow.

I was content with ogling at his amazing drawings on the internet but then I found out that he also sells clothing and accessories! That's right, you can wear his adorable illustrations on. your. body. And everyone will know how cool you are because of your impeccable taste.

I picked those song lyrics as my title because now I'm spending all day thinking about those lovely "Angel Eyes" tights (bottom left) and what I would wear them with if I had the money. I might just save up for them because they are just SO pretty.Sadly, I currently have no money for all of this.

Yes, I know this was a really short post but you will love me anyways, right? Right.
Peace out cub scouts,
Kanyinsola

Well when she opened her eyes, but what did she see

This outfit was inspired by my obsession with Meadham Kirchoff. I would really like to dress like this (eccentrically) more often, but seriously this outfit took quite a while to come up with and then get everything ready. But I decided to do it today because I have no social life I had some free time on my hands.

Almost everything in the outfit is thrifted except from the pink jacket (Children's Place), the pink flower headpiece-thing is actually just a headband with clip on flowers, and the tulle veil is cut from a skirt that's too small for me.

The outfit was inspired by those five looks from the Meadham Kirchoff Fall 2010 RTW and Spring 2011 RTW collections

I think the outfit kind of fits the whole eclectic in a good way vibe that applies to most of MK's designs. In my opinion, going full circle in fashion would mean reconnecting to dressing a certain way to have fun and be creative instead of to impress or be "functional" and Meadham Kirchoff has that figured out.

Now the only thing I need to complete the look is the over the top (and by over the top I mean just utter perfection) hair and makeup.

Art Moderne

Today I made my first attempt at "modern" art. The set is kind of a mix between photography, collage using the newspaper, and painting. I gave them all weird, interpretive, artsy names because that's just what modern artists do.
"Lost Identity"

"Shout" featuring random heads*

"Off the Walls"

"Work in Progress"

"Brush to the front"

"Absolute Value"

*"Random Heads" by the way is the name of the cover band I plan to start when I'm 16. It's either that or "Floating Skulls" Which one do you guys think I should go with?

Artfully yours,
K

Tata Naka Girls

The Tata Naka girls. They are the ultimate high school girl gang, able to live simultaneously in the nifty fifties and the 1980s.
They make their own clothes based on their hobbies, which include

  • traipsing through modern art galleries
  • occasionally cutting gym class to wander through fields of of flowers
  • hanging out in back alleys
  • making origami Valentine's day cards
  • stealing clothes from the boy's locker room and/or their boyfriends' closet
  • doing graffiti
  • working after-school at the record store
  • going to carnivals at night
  • being painfully suburban
  • listening to The Cure and Pink Floyd
  • having surprisingly intense school spirit
  • impersonating adults to attend business meetings and/or buy cars under their names (idk why)
  • being punk rock in general
  • having grrrl power

Those are just some pictures that capture the vibes of the Tata Naka girls (kind of. there's only so much tumblr can give you).

Anywho now that you kind of know what to expect, here is the Tata Naka Fall 2013 Ready to Wear Collection.
Tata-Naka Fall 2013
This is one of the looks from the collection that I feel like could end up looking busy or messy if it isn't styled correctly, but it is. I really like the heart cutouts on the pants though.

Tata-Naka Fall 2013
This one is just really cool to me because of the casualness of it. I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I really love tweed and skirts with pockets in them. So..

Tata-Naka Fall 2013
This dress is quite simple but the necklace and the sheer strips at the end just make it stand out to me.

Seven words: cotton candy business executive dressed to kill

Tata-Naka Fall 2013
This is the look that most takes me back to the nifty fifties. I literally picked it as one of my favorites because it looked fun to twirl in.

Tata-Naka Fall 2013
This is probably my favorite look. I would wear it every day if I could. The different layers just make it really fun and cute.

Tata-Naka Fall 2013
To me, the appeal of this dress is the collagey-ness of the bottom half. It looks thrown together, but you can tell effort was put in to make it look cohesive.

Overall, the Tata Naka Fall 2013 Ready to Wear Collection is now one of my favorites.

Can I just say that whoever did the art direction/scenery was just genius. I mean it's just.... ugh, I have no words.

Sorry I just bombed you guys with pictures there.

Poetry on Thoughts

It's been awhile hasn't it. Sorry, but writing new posts is harder than I thought it would be.
Anywho, this is just a poem I wrote. It's kind of about how there isn't really a revolution or anything for kids today (my inner grandma shines through).

There's revolution in them
In their hearts and souls
The ache to belong

Pitter-patter of their mismatched feet
Marching on the ground
Pitter-patter trying their best to march
To the beat of the ones who came before them
Ones whose feet marched in time
To the the rhythm of the times

Top of the lungs shouting
Woodstock give me something
March on Washington give me something
Anti-war movement give me something
Environmentalists give me something
Movements, people give me something
More than we have now

Top of the lungs shouting
Give me somewhere to belong
Give me something to fight for

Chants back in unison
We can't give you our revolution
Our times have come and gone
Our people, our music, our causes

You want a revolution?
Yes! Yes!
Find it, make it yours

You want somewhere to belong?
Yes! Yes!
Here. Now
Make it yours

Race back to the here and now
Marching to the pitter patter
Of their own beat
Their own revolution
Their own times

You can hear the new melody in their hearts
If you listen, listen closely
You can hear the old ones too

~
Is that any good? I'm not really sure because I've never really done any poetry outside of school before.

Later,
K

eta : I'm reading this a year later (even though I really shouldn't be) and hating it. C'est la vie.
